Smart meter with appliance recognition for every European

Amsterdam, 3 October 2017 – The German meter manufacturer EasyMeter and the Belgian smart energy monitor Smappee are raising the bar for smart meters during the European Utility Week. They are introducing a meter that, unlike current smart meters, provides real-time insight into the energy consumption of individual appliances and thus involves the consumer in their energy consumption. EasyMeter and Smappee are convinced that this insight is the key to success for the smart meter that until now has not achieved its potential and intended results.

Current smart meter not smart enough

The EU wants at least 80 per cent of all analogue energy meters to be replaced with smart meters by 2020. The objective is to reduce emissions and energy consumption in Europe by 9 per cent. ‘Almost all European countries are actively implementing smart meters for the expansion of smart transmission and distribution networks’, explains Heinrich Wienold, CEO at EasyMeter. ‘Yet we see that the current smart meters are not cost effective and do not increase energy efficiency. Governments want cheap solutions they can market quickly and smoothly. The primary motive is not energy and cost savings for the consumer. The consumer does not feel involved and therefore does not adapt their energy consumption habits.’

Smart meter with Smappee technology

To make the smart meter successful, real-time data at the level of individual appliances is required. Governments and energy companies are finally starting to realise this. ‘If you want consumers to use less energy, you have to encourage them in a way that interests them’, asserts Stefan Grosjean, founder and CEO of Smappee. ‘Together with EasyMeter we have devised a ready-made solution: a smart meter with Smappee technology, which is a new standard for the smart meter.’ The solution involves an additional Smappee port, the S1 port, to which the smart energy monitor can be connected. This simple and cheap solution can extract information on the real-time energy production of solar panels and the consumption data for each individual appliance. ‘The consumer can follow this information in the Smappee app and respond immediately, how and when they want to’, says Grosjean. ‘That enables them to adjust their consumption behaviour and really achieve savings.’ This is also a perfect solution for governments and energy companies. Thanks to a small measure, citizens can be actively involved in environmental objectives and further expand their smart transmission and distribution networks.

About EasyMeter

EasyMeter is not the first company to have ever built electricity meters. The intention is however to improve the meters – increased accuracy, longevity, robustness, modularity and interaction with other applications. Technology was the start, and the result is best in class. The company EasyMeter GmbH stands for simple, modular meter solutions. The development and production takes place in Bielefeld, Westphalia. We are thus talking about meter technology made in Germany. Significant factors are the close vicinity to the customer and short delivery chains. For EasyMeter, German Engineering is not only a concept but also a characteristic linked to the high-quality requirements of the development and production processes. Since 2009, our meters have been equipped with a measuring chip we developed ourselves. Every meter that leaves the factory is the result of careful quality controls, engagement, expertise and the right dose of passion, and it is ready for life-long use. You can rely on that 100 per cent. Since 2010, the company has been under the leadership of Heinrich Wienold, visionary in the field of electricity meters and former manager of EFR GmbH. The first meter was produced a long time ago. Today, we offer our customers a broad range of products, from alternating current and three-phase current meters to industrial meters with additional accessories.
