Cyclis Bike Lease, based in Hasselt, aims to get people cycling in a carefree and enjoyable way. Since 2014, the company’s fleet has grown to more than 42,000 bikes, and it has expanded its activities to the Netherlands. When moving into a new building, Cyclis chose a fully electrified vehicle fleet supported by sustainable charging solutions.
The challenge
Cyclis wanted to link the electrification of its fleet with an efficient, reliable, and future-proof charging solution. It had to fit within the company’s sustainability vision while keeping things comfortable for employees and avoiding unnecessary administrative complexity.

Getting people on bikes in an easy and worry-free way has been Cyclis Bike Lease’s mission since 2014. And successfully so — CEO Joep Kempen and his team have already put more than 90,000 people on two wheels. “Our current active fleet includes over 42,000 bikes,” Joep says proudly. “We initially focused on Belgium, and about a year and a half ago, we expanded into the Netherlands.”
Around the same time, Cyclis bought its current building. “It used to be a kitchen showroom. While redesigning the entire space, we decided to fully electrify our vehicle fleet. Installing charging stations on our parking lot made perfect sense — especially with all the solar panels on our roof.”
Convinced by Smappee
That’s when Artecco, the company run by Raf Aerts and Sien Veraghtert, came into the picture. Based in Tessenderlo-Ham, they specialise in renewable energy solutions — from solar panels and batteries to heat pumps and EV chargers. “Our HR manager, Christy Coomans, conducted market research, and Artecco came out on top. We haven’t regretted that decision for a second,” says Joep.
When Raf started Artecco, he installed various brands of chargers. “But over time, I began recommending Smappee to all my clients,” he explains. “This Belgian manufacturer truly delivers on the promise of smart charging and powerful energy management. Minimalist design
Like many of Artecco’s clients, Cyclis Bike Lease first tested a single EV One charger at one employee’s home. When that proved a hit, fifteen more followed. At the company’s parking lot, ten more have been in use for over a year. “They’re elegant design solutions, all with protective casing. The respect our team has for these chargers is clear — you can see it in the care they take when parking,” Joep laughs.
Geert Honof, Smappee representative for Limburg, Antwerp and Flemish Brabant, smiles. “This charger is one of our showpieces. The minimalist design blends seamlessly into any environment, while the plug is neatly hidden behind a discrete logo plate. With a single charging outlet, it keeps installation and management simple. Automatic online upgrades keep it up to date. It’s compatible with all EVs and charging cards, giving users total freedom. Built-in leakage detection and overload protection complete the technical package.”
Smart energy management
“The interaction between Smappee’s charging stations and energy management system offers major benefits,” Geert continues. “Load balancing ensures available power is evenly distributed across all charging points, preventing expensive peak loads or the need to upgrade the grid connection. Charging becomes safe and efficient. Split billing allows employees to easily get reimbursed for home charging costs — no administrative hassle. Cyclis can even schedule charging during off-peak hours to save costs.”
Joep sums it up with a smile: “We’ve never heard a single negative comment about the Smappee chargers. The wiring is already in place to expand the setup later. Maybe one day we’ll open the chargers to the public outside office hours — but our employees’ comfort always comes first. It’s good to know that with Artecco and Smappee, everything is taken care of.”
