Smappee provides you all the insights and tools you need to ensure the most efficient energy consumption possible. But how can you concretely transform this into savings? To help you, we have put together a list of 4 convenient steps.

1) Become more energy-conscious

Measurement means management. Smappee does not only measure your exact, total consumption; Smappee even narrows this down to appliance level. Consult the data on your smartphone (via the Smappee app) or your computer (via MySmappee) and get to know your house even better than before. Our customer survey revealed that clear insight into your energy consumption and the costs instantly will naturally lead to more awareness when it comes to your energy consumption habits. Don’t worry, there is no need to put your household on any kind of ‘energy diet’ to achieve this. You will be able to achieve astounding savings simply by making more conscious use of electricity, gas and water - without any concessions in comfort.

2) Discover which appliances consume excessive energy

With the information provided by the Smappee app at your fingertips, you can become your household’s true-to-life energy manager! The insights you can gain from this app are worth their weight in gold if you want to save energy (and therefore, money as well). Just scroll through the list of appliances. Which appliances consume the most energy? And just how much money is this appliance’s energy consumption costing you? If your appliance is using too many Watts in proportion to how often it is used, your appliance is not energy-efficient. In other words, it is using too many kWh while there are better alternatives available. Our Facebook page received overwhelming response from Smappee users to the question of which appliance they found to be a genuine energy-guzzler. The sad winners were old washing machines, dryers, refrigerators and freezers. Hans, for example, discovered that he paid €65 a year for the use of a refrigerator that did not even have a freezer compartment! The use of a more energy-efficient model would cost him only €21 a year. Perhaps the time has come for you to replace your old appliances too?

3) Why pay for energy you are not using?

Some appliances use energy, even when you are not using them. Prime examples include the lights of your computer, digicorder, etc., which are permanently on. The blue dot on your Smappee app calculates your average standby power consumption in the past 24 hours and how much you are paying for this. Why make unnecessary costs? When you add up the total energy consumption of all appliances on standby, this could come to between €50 and €100 a year. That’s simply money being thrown away, isn’t it? You can easily avoid standby energy consumption: simply unplug your smartphone chargers, digital decoders, game consoles, etc. when you are not using them. Do you have multiple appliances in one and the same room? If so, a programmable power strip may be a wise investment.

4) Always choose the cheapest energy supplier

That cheapest energy supplier even provides energy entirely free of charge: the sun. More and more people are installing solar panels to supply their own energy needs. Currently, in 2017, we are less dependent on energy distributors than ever before. The Smappee app lets you use the surplus of energy produced to control electrical appliances, without this costing you a penny. Even more: thanks to our collaboration with SolarCoin, you can even use this to earn money! Don’t have solar panels? No worries, the Smappee app will also allow you to see which supplier will give you the best rates. A study conducted by VREG showed that an average family easily pays €80.23 more for electricity than the cheapest energy rates on the market. With regard to gas, the difference between the average rate and the cheapest was even €161.18. Therefore, savings of €241.41 could even be achieved for electricity and gas put together!
