An office building is busiest when employees arrive in the morning, meeting rooms fill up and heating, cooling and lighting systems respond to occupancy. Warehouses often see peaks when vehicles return from deliveries. Manufacturing sites have production schedules that leave little room for interruptions.

These activities are essential to keeping the business running, and workplace charging shouldn't compete with them.

Instead, charging should automatically adapt to what's happening elsewhere in the building, ensuring that essential operations always receive priority while vehicles continue charging in the background.

Not Every Vehicle Needs to Charge Immediately

Unlike many other electrical loads, EV charging offers flexibility. Most employee vehicles remain parked for several hours, while fleet vehicles often have planned departure times. That means charging doesn't always need to happen immediately or at maximum power.

An intelligent Energy Management System continuously monitors the building's energy demand and automatically adjusts charging according to the available capacity. If heating, cooling, lighting, IT infrastructure or other critical operations require more electricity, charging automatically adapts. As capacity becomes available again, vehicles continue charging.

Keeping Control as Charging Demand Grows

For many organisations, workplace charging starts with a small number of charging stations but this can quickly change.

As more employees switch to electric vehicles, company fleets expand and visitors increasingly expect charging facilities, what began with four chargers may eventually become twenty or more.

That's not a hypothetical, workplace charging in Europe is growing roughly 24.5% a year, meaning sites that start small today are likely to be scaling within a few years. This growth isn't only driven by employee demand. 

Under the EU's Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), any new or renovated non-residential building with 20+ parking spaces must already install at least one charging point today, rising to one per 10 spaces from 2027. Whether or not you're planning for it, the number of chargers on site is set to grow.

Growth like this can quickly increase the complexity of managing charging infrastructure. More vehicles, different charging needs and changing occupancy patterns all place greater demands on the workplace.

With intelligent energy management already in place, adding charging stations doesn't mean starting over. New chargers simply become part of the existing energy ecosystem, allowing businesses to expand with confidence while maintaining the same reliable charging experience.
