EV Charging for Boutique Hotels: Getting the Power and Design Right
Boutique hotels pay attention to details. The linens, the lighting, the furniture and even the scent in the lobby all contribute to the experience guests have when they arrive. EV charging is becoming part of that experience.
For a small hotel, adding a charger brings a few practical challenges. Parking spaces are often close to the entrance or courtyard, which makes the charging hardware highly visible. Older buildings may also have limited electrical capacity available once the kitchen, laundry, HVAC and other equipment are running.
So before installing a charger, there are two things worth looking at:
- how much charging the building can support
- what kind of hardware fits the property
Guests are already voting with their bookings
EV charging is increasingly influencing where EV drivers choose to stay. The challenge for independent and boutique hotels is finding a way to offer charging that works with the property they already have.
Smaller hotels often have tighter electrical limits, fewer parking spaces and less room to hide equipment that doesn't suit the building.

Problem One (invisible): the Electrical Panel Can’t Take it
Some boutique hotels operate from older buildings such as townhouses, manor houses or converted mills. Their electrical installations were designed long before guests started arriving with EVs.
The hotel's existing connection already has plenty to handle. Kitchens, laundry equipment, HVAC, lighting and other systems all draw power throughout the day. When two or more EVs start charging on top of that, the remaining capacity can disappear quickly.
That doesn't mean the hotel needs a larger grid connection. It makes sense to first see how much more can be done with the capacity that's already available:
- Dynamic load balancing adjusts the power available to chargers based on what the rest of the building is using. When consumption elsewhere drops, more power becomes available for charging.
- Overload protection reduces charging power automatically when total consumption approaches the building's limit, helping prevent breakers from tripping.
- Better use of existing capacity can allow hotels to install chargers without immediately upgrading their electrical service, with installation costs potentially around 25% lower than sizing everything for worst-case demand.
- Solar can also be included in the setup. Available solar generation can be used for guest charging, while flexible consumption can be shifted towards cheaper off-peak hours.

Problem Two (visible): a Charger that Fits the Picture
Large hotels often have somewhere discreet to put their chargers. They might sit in a multi-storey car park or in a row of spaces away from the main entrance.
For a 10-room boutique there may only be three or four parking spaces, which could be directly beside the entrance or in the courtyard. Whatever goes there becomes part of the property.
That's worth thinking about when so much care has gone into everything around it. A reclaimed oak entrance, carefully selected exterior lighting and a landscaped courtyard can look very different once bulky charging equipment and loose cables are added.
Charging hardware has come a long way in this respect. Some chargers are now designed to work in more visible settings, with finishes made for long-term outdoor use, cleaner cable management and more attention paid to the physical design of the unit itself.
For boutique hotels, these details deserve consideration alongside charging speed and installation cost. The charger will probably stay in place for years, and guests may see it every time they enter or leave the property.
What’s the ROI?
Once the charging setup works within the hotel's available capacity, there is another practical question to answer: how will people use and pay for it?
A few decisions can make charging easier to manage and help recover some of the cost:
- Choose how guests pay. Charging can be complimentary, charged per session or per kWh, or added to the room bill. The chargers can also be made available to the public, creating an additional source of revenue when parking spaces aren't needed by hotel guests.
- Track charging and energy use through a dashboard. An owner-operator can see how often chargers are being used and what they're costing without needing a dedicated facilities team.
- Split billing automatically ties each charging session to the guest, room, or public user who used it, so those costs get tracked and settled correctly instead of disappearing into the hotel's general electricity bill.
- Use remote software updates. Pricing, configuration and software changes can be handled remotely, so a technician doesn't have to visit every time something changes.
There isn't one pricing model that works for every hotel. Complimentary charging may suit a property that wants to include it in the room experience. Other hotels may prefer split billing or public charging during quieter periods.
When and how to add EV charging to Your Hotel
There's no need to install charging for every parking space immediately. Starting with one or two chargers gives you a chance to see how guests use them before committing to a larger installation.
A reasonable starting point:
- Get an accurate picture of your current electrical capacity before assuming an upgrade is necessary.
- Install one or two chargers together with an Energy Management System with built-in dynamic load balancing.
- Monitor via your EMS the impact on consumption and costs.
- Decide upfront how you'll price charging for hotel guests and, if relevant, public users.
- Choose hardware that suits the building and the space where it will be installed.
- If you plan to open charging to the public, check the EU's AFIR rules on price display and payment methods first.
