Smappee launches virtual battery that lets you charge your EV on the go with your own solar energy
Smappee Smiles’ virtual battery saves families an average €800 per year.

Harelbeke, 15 May 2025 – Today, cleantech pioneer Smappee launches a new innovation called Smappee Smiles. A key feature of this solution is a virtual battery that allows families and businesses to digitally store their surplus solar energy. This green and low-cost energy can later be used to charge their electric vehicle at a Smappee Smartstop fast-charging hub. This way, they can use their solar energy whenever it suits them — even while on the move.
For solar panel owners, this innovative concept is particularly attractive: feeding excess energy back into the grid now yields little to no financial return — or even incurs costs — while they pay full price when drawing electricity from the grid. Smappee Smiles, currently available exclusively in Flanders, delivers an average annual saving of €800 per household. The virtual battery confirms Smappee’s role as an innovator and is a key component in their mission to make the energy transition more affordable and accessible to everyone, faster.
New opportunities for energy partners
Smappee Smiles is also a valuable addition to the portfolios of energy suppliers and other players in the energy market. Just as Smappee Smartstop offers more than charging stations, Smiles is more than hardware: it is a turnkey solution with technology and expertise that optimises energy costs, simplifies charge management, and provides flexibility and control. Smappee Smiles enables these partners to differentiate themselves while offering a powerful response to the growing demand for energy-efficient solutions that fully leverage solar energy.
“The virtual battery gives families and businesses full control over their energy. With Smappee Smiles, we offer energy partners the opportunity to provide this innovation to their customers as well. Energy Together is the first supplier to bring Smappee Smiles to the market. Smappee uses this partnership to test and demonstrate the technology, with the aim of offering Smiles through other energy suppliers as well. Exploratory talks are already underway with parties interested in including the virtual battery in their offerings. Together, we are accelerating the energy transition and making it affordable and accessible to all,” says Stefan Grosjean, founder and CEO of Smappee Group.
Sharing energy with yourself, even on the go
From the families and businesses that are already signing up to get started with this innovation, Smappee Smiles will select a group that can subscribe to the Smappee Smiles dynamic energy contract and virtual battery. Smappee Smiles uses the Smappee Infinity smart energy management system to match consumption to the cheapest times, avoid peaks, reduce capacity tariffs and digitally store unused solar energy and track its status. This is how Smappee exploits the untapped potential of solar energy, even for EV drivers in cities without a home charging station. Now they, too, have a reason to invest in solar panels.
“Smappee Smiles offers a completely new perspective on how we use and share energy. With the virtual battery, you can use your green power whenever you want, offering an attractive alternative to a physical home battery.

“The Smappee App shows in real-time how much energy is available in your battery for low-cost charging at a Smappee Smartstop. You are, in effect, sharing energy with yourself and taking your solar energy with you wherever you go.”
Smart energy management with maximum return
“Smappee Smiles proves that the energy transition doesn’t have to be complex or expensive,” says Bart Vercoutere, acting CEO of Smappee Services.
“Combining real-time insights, smart energy management and a virtual battery maximises the return on energy, whether it comes from the grid or from your own solar panels. Our app and virtual battery make energy management tangible, flexible and profitable for everyone.” According to figures from the VNR (2025), families save an average of €299 per year with a dynamic energy contract compared to a fixed contract. With Smappee Smiles, this saving increases by an additional €800 on average.
Smappee Smiles is currently available exclusively in Flanders and offers flexible contracts for various energy needs: from the entry-level Lite plan to the advanced Sunplus plan with dynamic tariffs, smart energy management, a virtual battery and charging cards for the Smappee Smartstop network. Note to editors: The calculation of the average savings potential of €800 via the virtual battery is based on a saving of €0.40 per kWh on an average injection of 2000 kWh.
