The German meter manufacturer EasyMeter and the Belgian smart energy monitor Smappee are raising the bar for smart meters during the European Utility Week. They are introducing a meter that, unlike current smart meters, provides real-time insight into the energy consumption of individual appliances and thus involves the consumer in their energy consumption. EasyMeter and Smappee are convinced that this insight is the key to success for the smart meter that until now has not achieved its potential and intended results.

Last months we have been showcasing our new Smappee Plus product, with our energy monitoring solutions attracting widespread interest and positive feedback from show attendees. We took many questions from solar installers who were eager to understand how Smappee and more broadly, energy monitoring technology can help expand their business beyond their core solar markets and how best to sell their expanding solutions to their customers. So we wanted to provide installers with some suggestions for introducing smart energy monitoring to their customers, both old and new.

Today, Maroš Šefčovič, Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for Energy Union, and Belgian Federal Minister of Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development Marie-Christine Marghem visited the Eurometropolis -Lille, Kortrijk, Tournai- in the context of innovation for consumers in relation to energy and the environment. As part of this, they visited the cleantech company Smappee that makes smart energy monitors and the corresponding apps which enable families to handle energy in a sustainable manner. The visitors were given a guided tour and explanation of how Smappee works. The company, that is celebrating its fifth anniversary, also elaborated on CEO Stefan Grosjean’s plans to build an incubator for innovative energy start-ups in Kortrijk.

Almost every European country today is taking initiatives to roll out smart meters – it’s a multibillion dollar industry. But will these initiatives deliver on energy efficiency? Early results in some markets show that some initiatives are not cost effective and fail to deliver on energy efficiencies. The lesson for other countries is this: if you want consumers to change their habits and save energy, allow for a fun factor – and to make that possible, you need high quality access to the energy data.

As we mentioned in our last blog post, the Smappee team attended Intersolar North America for the first time to meet with solar installers and distributors, to find out about the latest trends in solar and energy monitoring and how they’re being integrated into installs.

Our goal at Intersolar was to demonstrate the new Smappee Plus designed for the residential solar market and gain feedback from a number of U.S. installers, distributors and solar industry reporters. While we knew that the Smappee Plus was unique from other solar and energy monitors, the overall reaction from our audience was that the Smappee Plus and our other energy monitoring systems were truly unlike any our solar experts had seen before.
